The Economics of Green

The Challenges of Building Green in a Struggling Economy

By Deb Kleinman, Executive Director, USGBC Colorado Chapter

Deb Picture

You may have had the opportunity to hear Van Jones, Founder and President of Green For All, speak atPiggy Bank Greenbuild 2008.  Mr. Jones has become a powerful voice for the burgeoning green jobs movement, which has put an economically, socially and environmentally just agenda on the forefront of the changing political tide.

Mr. Jones said something in Boston which has stuck with me. He was speaking of the incredibly challenging and difficult times we are facing in the United States and around the world, and of the incredible potential for profound and rapid change – and remarked that he didn’t know how you would hold both of those things in your hands at the same time.

That is a simple and profound way to express what we are all feeling at this historical moment in human history. So many of our friends, neighbors, family, colleagues are facing an uncertain financial future.  Jobs which seemed secure, and careers which seemed full of promise are now being eliminated and new opportunities are not yet emerging in an immediate or concrete way.

And yet, I still believe that we, the green building community, represent one of the most important paths out of our crisis, and that where we ultimately land will be a far more just, sustainable, and beautiful place.

USGBC Colorado 2009 Board Elections

I’d like to thank all of the individuals who expressed interest in serving on the USGBC Colorado Board of Directors - a critical and at times thankless job. It is exciting to see the quality of individuals serving in leadership roles in the Chapter. The seven individuals who submitted their qualifications several months ago are:

  • Clay Benson, Mortenson Construction
  • Candice Clark, Solatube International
  • Julie Edwards, Oz Architecture
  • Jim Ellis, Bold Ventures LLC
  • Shahnaz Jafari, Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute
  • Mike Kolesar, Facility Engineering Association
  • Andy Paterson, Haworth
