"How do I Find LEED-Specific Continuing Education Hours?"

By Jessica Pascoe, Director of Education
USGBC Colorado Chapter

BD+C Homes ID+C O+M ND

If you are a LEED Professional that has opted in to GBCI's Credential Maintenance Program, you are most likely trying to figure out how to attain the elusive "LEED-Specific" continuing education hours (6 for APs and 3 for GAs). Fortunately, USGBC Colorado is one of 11 Chapter Delivery Partners working directly with USGBC to deliver LEED Core Curriculum Workshops. The Colorado Chapter is also an approved USGBC Education Provider. LEED specific hours can be attained though USGBC LEED workshops, LEED project experience, or Education Review Body (ERB) approved LEED-Specific courses.

Building Design and Construction-this Friday (walk-ins welcome before 8am)
The vast majority 0f LEED APs have the BD+C specialty, so on August 20 USGBC CO is hosting BD+C 251: Understanding the LEED Building Design and Construction Rating System from 8:30am-5pm at Swinerton Inc in Arvada, CO. This workshop addresses the following LEED rating systems: LEED for New Construction & Major Renovations, LEED for Core & Shell, and LEED for Schools. Throughout the day, LEED Faculty Brian Dunbar and Dana Kose engage you in discussions and interactive activities based on real LEED projects
to enforce what you've learned. This workshop offers 7 GBCI CE Hours (LEED BD+C specific). Additional Continuing Education Credits available include: AIA/CE SHSW/SDLU (7), BOMI CPD (7), CSI CEU(.7), IFMA CFM/FMP (7). This is a 200-level class that builds on core LEED concepts, we recommend taking the LEED 201: Core Concepts & Strategies in advance.

Operations and Maintenance
LEED Professionals with the O+M specialty can get 7 GBCI CE hrs (LEED O+M specific) at O+M 301: Implementing the Building Operations + Maintenance LEED Rating System on November 5 at the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building in Denver. This workshop is intended for building owners, operators and suppliers who are familiar with the LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Rating System, but new to implementing it on projects or looking to brush up on implementation best practices. It is also useful for design professionals, investors and others seeking to enhance their existing buildings with green operations. It is appropriate for new LEED APs, as well as those pursuing GBCI's LEED AP Building Operations + Maintenance credential. Additional Continuing Education Credits available include: AIA/CES HSW/SDLU(7), BOMI CPD(7), and CSICEU(.7). This is a 300-level course. The 200-level LEED Core Concepts and Strategies course is strongly recommended as preparation.

Homes, Interior Design and Construction, and Neighborhood Development
Due to lower demand for Homes, ID+C, and ND continuing education, USGBC CO currently does not have any LEED specific education scheduled for these specialties. If you are interested in registering for a LEED workshop in one of these areas, please email Kathryn Long at kate@usgbccolorado.org. Once we have 15 people on the waiting list for a workshop, we will schedule a workshop with USGBC.

Project Experience
LEED Specific CE hours can also be acquired through project experience. The project must be
registered, although not necessarily completed or certified, in order for CE hours to be awarded. Documentation that a LEED Professional has worked on projects in specific credit areas would be verified through the LEED Online Process, or through a letter of attestation written by the project manager/employer/client.

Education Reviewing Body (ERB) Approved LEED-Specific Education
LEED-specific hours may be earned for any courses that are approved and designated as LEED-specific by a USGBC Education Provider. These include college and university courses, professional development/continuing education (conferences), authorship (GBCI will audit your work to determine if it is LEED specific), or self-study. See USGBC Course Catalog for course listings.
