Sustainable Best Practices in Large Scale Mixed-Use Development:
Cost-Benefit, LEED-ND & Beyond
Dan Cohen, Conor Merrigan, Erik Bonnett, Chad Riley

This session will explore a number of best practices for large projects including infrastructure development, site planning, contextual considerations, and Colorado specific regional considerations. The panel of experts will present various concepts and practices gleaned from project experience and research in order to lead an interactive discussion to assess which practices make the most sense in Colorado and at larger scales nationwide. Potential tools for analysis include carbon impact and resource use, cost-benefit, end-use least cost/least impact, and green rating and certification systems. The panel discussion will explore topics including a cost- benefit perspective, a critique and presentation of best practice as defined by LEED for Neighborhood Development (ND), and a survey of best-practice measures and frameworks used in leading developments.

During the structured panel discussion, the audience will participate in a critique of practices in order to determine which make the most sense (and cents). There will be a number of pre-selected topics that will ultimately be ranked on several factors in order to determine which can have THE MOST IMPACT ON LARGE SCALE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE IN COLORADO. Audience members will ask questions and vote at regular intervals on the pre-selected topics and in the end a top 10 list will be generated for attendees and transmitted electronically along with supporting links in real-time.
